Saro Manoukian specialises in both electronic and acoustic music, creating works for concert performance and multimedia projects with a focus on storytelling and collaboration. He has scored short films featured in competitions including the Berlin International Film Scoring Competition and the Indie Film Music Contest (IFMC), where his score for Love is a Gift reached the finalist stage. His cinematic approach also informs his concert music, such as Incandescence for brass dectet, premiered at the Royal Academy of Music in 2024, which explores expansive gestures and resonant harmonies designed to immerse audiences. Manoukian frequently collaborates across disciplines, as in Sounding Shadows with Manchester-based artist Rhianna Moane, where he paired her hypnotic, symmetrical visual work with a delicate, minimalist piano score, and Forest Ranger, an electronic piece featuring vocals recorded by his sister Fimi. He recently composed music for Reflections — Sangat and the Self, a film installation documenting artistic processes, and is currently writing the original score for The Human Voice, TheatreAlive!'s London production of Jean Cocteau's play. His Armenian, Welsh, and Irish heritage shapes his musical language: Kar for solo cello, also premiered at the Royal Academy of Music in 2024, draws on Armenian sacred music as a meditative response to his time immersed in the tradition. Rather than simply representing this heritage, Manoukian's work treats it as something to be actively questioned and reworked, each piece a fresh attempt to locate himself within it.
